Leading Leonard Bernstein expert Edward Seckerson, double Olivier Award nominee Sophie-Louise Dann and double Tony Award nominee Jason Carr celebrate 100 years of Leonard Bernstein, the musical superman who bestrode the Broadway stage as wholeheartedly and adeptly as he did the world’s great concert halls.

Through a heady cocktail of stories and songs, the trio draw upon their vast knowledge of the scores and the stories behind them to create a unique evening exploring the life and music of this extraordinary man.

Edward conducted one of the last major interviews with Bernstein less than a year before his death in 1990, and it is that memorable encounter that is at the heart of this intimate show.

Performed live on stage are songs from some of the most popular musicals of all time, including West Side StoryCandideOn the Town and Wonderful Town, as well as gorgeous rarities from 1600 Pennsylvania AvenuePeter PanMass and Trouble in Tahiti.

He regularly interviews stars of stage and screen on stages around the country, including his highly successful show with Patricia Routledge, Facing the Music, which focuses on her extraordinary but perhaps less well-known career in musical theatre. He has published books on Gustav Mahler and the conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, and is a regular contributor to Gramophone Magazine.

Sophie-Louise Dann (vocals), currently starring as Mme. Thérnadier in the UK tour of Les Misérables, is one of Britain’s brightest musical theatre stars. She is a double Olivier Award nominee for her roles in The Girls and Lend Me a Tenor!; other notable credits include Bend it Like Beckham; Made in Dagenham; 42nd Street; Spamilton; A Spoonful of Sherman; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street; Hairspray; Oliver!; Forbidden Broadway; Sunday in the Park with George and numerous leading roles for D’Oyly Carte Opera. She is a regular guest artiste on Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night and as a soloist on all the major concert platforms.

Jason Carr (piano) is the Musical Supervisor and Orchestrator for the Royal Exchange’s West Side Story. His orchestrations for Sunday in the Park with George and La Cage aux Folles earned him Tony Award nominations; other credits include Fiddler on the Roof, A Little Night Music and Candide. His own musicals include Born Again, The Water Babies, Six Pictures of Lee Miller and A Christmas Carol. He has composed incidental music for over 50 plays at the National Theatre, RSC, in the West End and on Broadway, and accompanied many notable artists including Elisabeth Welch, Michael Ball, Felicity Lott and Maria Friedman. He arranged, produced and played on Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid’s album You Are The Best Thing That Ever Has Happened To Me.
